SCHOOL PROGRAMS
The Education Department at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum offers a wide array of tours, outreach programs, loan kits and learning experiences suitable for students and adults alike. All programming is free, but advanced arrangements/reservations are required.

School Tours and Programs
Please schedule school tours at least two weeks in advance. We ask that one adult accompany each eight students visiting the Museum. To schedule a school tour, contact epaulin@tchmuseum.org or call (616) 842-0700 x 132.

In cases of inclement weather, please refer to school closing information. If Grand Haven Public Schools are closed, the Tri-Cities Historical Museum is automatically closed and any scheduled school tours are cancelled.
What is a Museum?
This 45-minute tour introduces different types of museums, museum artifacts, and ways to learn at a museum. Ideal for preschool and kindergarten students.
1st Grade Tour
This 2-hour tour gives young learners a brief introduction to Michigan history, with an overview of the Museum’s permanent exhibits followed by hands-on activities.
2nd Grade Tour
Focusing on Native American Life, The Fur Trade, Michigan’s Lumbering Era, Michigan Pioneers, Farming, and Victorian Life in America, this 2 to 3-hour tour is set to meet state curriculum guidelines for Social Studies. A walking tour of downtown is an optional culminating activity.
2nd Grade Classroom Visits
This is a six-week series of visits to local classrooms by a Museum staff member or trained docent who will present on Native Americans, The Fur Trade, Lumbering, Pioneers/Erie Canal, Farming, and the Victorian Era. Following each session, children can complete a workbook page (developed and provided by the Museum). Each weekly session lasts between 30 minutes to an hour—and the series perfectly culminates with a tour of the Museum, if you wish!
3rd Grade Tour
Designed to meet state curriculum guidelines for Social Studies, this 3.5-hour tour delves deeper into Native Americans and the Environment, Native American Myths and Legends, The Fur Trade, Pioneer Life, and The Erie Canal's Impact on Michigan.
4th-12th Grade Tours
Our Education Department staff can assist teachers in designing a tour to fit specific needs or focus on one of the Museum’s temporary exhibits.
Exhibit-wide scavenger hunts are available upon prior request for your scheduled tour. Available for all grade levels, and free of charge.
